Wimbledon championship cancelled for 2020 due to corona outbreak
The most prestigious tournament-Wimbledon championship 2020 has been cancelled considering the impact of the corona virus outbreak. This championship was scheduled from 29 June 2020 up to 12 July 2020. All England Lawn Tennis club has forced this decision considering the safety of players, management and support staff. It is for the first time, after the second world war, that the Wimbledon championship 2020 won’t take place in England. England Government has forced lockdown in the nation which makes the Wimbledon championship 2020 incompatible.
About Wimbledon championship:
Wimbledon, also known as “The Championship” was first held in 1877 in London, United Kingdom. It is the oldest and the most prestigious tournament for all the lawn tennis players. It is the only championship which takes place on a classic grass court. It is generally held in the month of June and July respectively. The first Wimbledon championship was by Spencer Gore in 1877. Roger Federer has won the championship a staggering 8 times in the history of the championship. He is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of lawn tennis. Whereas Martina Navratilova has won the tournament 9 times in women’s category.
Wimbledon 2019:
In 2019, the Wimbledon championship began on 1st of July and lasted up to 14th July. Novak Djokovic of Serbia was titled as the Men’s single champion whereas Simona Halep of France for the women’s single. Both were the defending champions for the Wimbledon 2020. They had the big responsibility on their shoulders to retain their title. Strange to note that Novak Djokovic was the Defending champion in the 2019 Wimbledon championship. Wimbledon 2019 made the world record for the greatest number of spectators for a lawn tennis tournament. In men’s single final, Novak Djokovic has to defend his title against the Switzerland’s legend Roger Federer. This match is regarded as the most thrilling and outstanding match in the history of the Wimbledon championship.
Cancellation of Wimbledon 2020:
After the cancellation of Wimbledon 2020, Roger Federer tweeted “Devasted, I can’t wait to come back next year. It only makes us appreciate our sport even more during these times. Various players have expressed their views on the decision of the All England Lawn Tennis club. Considering the Wimbledon, the ATP, WTA and ITF tours have announced all the cancellation of all championships before 13 July, this summer. Due to cancellation of the championship, the organization has to bear a great loss. But money wouldn’t be considered more important than the lives of people is the view of the organization. Wimbledon championship is watched all over the world by the keen tennis lovers. They have expressed grievance but have ultimate supported the decision. Various celebrated personalities have been spotted at the Wimbledon, enjoying the classic tennis. In fact, it had hurt the fans all over. Due to the outbreak, various sporting events has been cancelled or postponed. This has cost a huge loss to the sporting organizations. All we have to do is wait a year long to see great players clash in the Wimbledon championship.
